Marcus Kohler BA(Hons) MCIEEM
Founder and Director

Marcus has over 30 years’ experience as an ecologist and founded the award-winning business of MKA Ecology in 1998.

He brings to the business his excellent knowledge of British habitats and protected species, his expertise in working alongside professionals of all disciplines on complex projects and a determination to deliver service of the highest quality as efficiently as possible. Providing professional ecological services on projects as diverse as long-term gravel extraction, landfill and recreational landscaping, through pipelines and motorway widening has helped him build a considerable portfolio of ecological consultancy skills. He is client focused, committed to finding workable solutions and, where possible, to adding value.

Marcus also has extensive overseas ecological experience, having worked and travelled extensively in South East Asia, Australasia and Africa. He has over fifteen years’ experience as a wildlife tour leader, specializing in Madagascar, but also taking groups to many other destinations across four continents. Marcus has helped develop wildlife tour itineraries for several clients and has a deep understanding of international eco-tourism.

Marcus is a full member of the ecologists’ professional body, CIEEM and as with all of the MKA Ecology team, Marcus is a registered CSCS card holder.

William O’Connor

William O’Connor BSc(Hons) MSc CEcol MCIEEM
Director and Principal Ecologist

With over 15 years’ experience of ecological consultancy with MKA Ecology, Will has been leading our team of ecologists since becoming a Director in 2012 and has managed a diverse range of projects from large scale residential development, to bespoke Paragraph 79 house builds.

Typically taking the ecology lead in project design teams to achieve ecological compliance, he will also add value with appropriate ecological enhancement. In projects which are not development led, Will has a track record in sensitive biodiversity enhancement within historic landscapes.

Will’s expert knowledge of British wildlife and ecology combine with his thorough understanding of the planning process to result in recommendations in keeping with the scale of impact and surrounding landscape. This facilitates sustainable development, meaning successful projects and satisfied clients. He leads the production of ecology chapters for Environmental Impact Assessment at MKA.

A full member of the ecologists’ professional body, CIEEM, and a Chartered Ecologist, Will holds great crested newt and bat licences and is the named ecologist on many Natural England bat and badger licences.

He is an active committee member of Cambridgeshire Bat Group and committee member designate of the East of England committee of CIEEM. As with all of the MKA Ecology team, Will is a registered CSCS card holder.

Jane Kohler

Jane Kohler LLB(Hons)
Executive Director

Jane joined MKA Ecology in 2004, with 14 years’ experience as a commercial solicitor in two major international law firms.

Bringing the skills she developed working at a high level in successful and professional organizations to the management of the business, she is responsible for aspects as diverse as financial management, human resources, operational procedures, regulatory compliance and quality control. Recognising the importance of demonstrating MKA Ecology’s commitment to quality of service and to health and safety, she has successfully steered it to accreditations in quality – ISO 9001:2015 and health and safety with Alcumus:Safecontractor.

Jane enjoys promoting the excellent services offered by MKA Ecology and helps to ensure that the team abides by its watchwords: quality and teamwork.

Alfie

Alfie Bunting BSc(Hons) Qualifying CIEEM member
Ecologist

Alfie joined MKA Ecology as an ecologist in March 2024 and has 3 years of experience in ecological consultancy.

Alfie has previous experience in protected species surveys, habitat surveys, report writing, Biodiversity Net Gain assessments and undertaking ecological clerk of works duties for a range of protected species. Alfie also has experience in applying for Great Crested Newt District Level Licences with both Natural England and Naturespace.

Alfie is working towards Associate CIEEM membership, holds a Level 1 Great Crested Newt licence, and is also a registered CSCS card holder.

Sam

Sam Cook BSc(Hons) MSc
Project Coordinator

Sam joined MKA in June 2021, having gained experience in data analysis and project support in the financial services sector.

Sam will bring these skills to MKA Ecology to support with project operations, co-ordinating resources and managing the logistical aspect of surveys. Sam has had a lifelong interest in ecology and holds a Masters in Sustainability and Ecology at the Centre for Alternative Technology. Sam has also volunteered with street dogs in Thailand and with BirdLife Malta.

Joe

Suzanne Dry BSc(Hons) MSc
Consultant Ecologist

Suzy joined MKA Ecology in 2024 and has 4 years of experience as a professional ecologist in the private sector.

Suzy has previous experience in a range of different projects including utilities, infrastructure, flood defence, renewables, and residential developments. She can lead a variety of protected species and habitat surveys and has experience undertaking ecological clerk of works duties for a range of protected species.

Suzy is working towards Associate CIEEM membership, holds a Level 1 Great Crested Newt licence, and is also a registered CSCS card holder.

Marielle

Marielle James BSc(Hons) MRes MCIEEM
Principal Ecologist

Marielle joined MKA Ecology in 2023 and has 10 years’ experience as a professional ecologist, having worked in both the public and private sectors.

Marielle has extensive experience in a range of habitat and protected species surveys, designing and implementing mitigation and undertaking ecological clerk of works duties. She has worked on a wide variety of projects, including infrastructure, built environment, renewable energy developments and Nationally Significant Infrastructure Projects during her career. She is knowledgeable in a range of ecology specialisms and is an accomplished project manager who seeks to provide proportional and pragmatic solutions, managing risks to ecological receptors whilst developing strong relationships with clients.

Marielle is a full member of the ecologist’s professional body, CIEEM and holds great crested newt, hazel dormouse and bat licences. She is also a registered CSCS card holder.

Joe

Joe Gillis BSc(Hons)
Graduate Ecologist

Joe joined MKA Ecology as a graduate ecologist in October 2023 after completing a bachelor’s degree in Wildlife Conservation at Nottingham Trent University.

During his dissertation, Joe worked in partnership with Forestry England and Lincolnshire Deer Group to identify the threshold density at which deer start to negatively impact the biodiversity of a semi-natural ancient woodland to inform future management practices. Joe also studied a wide range of modules including ecological census techniques, animal behaviour, African ecology, wildlife law, and wildlife management.

Joe is actively looking for ways to improve his ecological skill set and is currently working towards his Qualifying CIEEM Membership.

Maddy Grove

Madelaine Grove (Mbiol)
Graduate Ecologist

Maddy joined MKA Ecology in September 2024 after graduating with a Masters in Biology (Mbiol) from the University of York.

During her studies, Maddy studied a variety of ecological modules including field ecology, species identification, habitat management, and soil health. She was interested in evolutionary biology in her second year and was awarded a scholarship to fund a Research Assistant Role studying Caribbean reef ecology in Akumal Bay, Mexico. This led to a dissertation focusing on climate change’s impacts on ecosystems, honing her computational population modelling skills. After graduation, Maddy gained ecological experience with local consultancies as a seasonal assistant introducing her to bat surveys, bat data analysis, and GCN field work. Maddy has joined MKA Ecology to expand her practical skillset and further her career in ecological consultancy.

Maddy is working towards CIEEM Qualifying membership.

Tom McGuire

Tom McGuire BSc(Hons) MSc Qualifying CIEEM member
Ecologist

Tom joined MKA Ecology as a graduate ecologist in March 2023 after completing a master’s degree in Biodiversity and Conservation at the University of Leeds.

During his master’s degree, he studied a range of modules including plant identification, insect identification skills, habitat management, and introduction to GIS skills for ecologists. His postgraduate thesis involved travelling to arctic Norway to survey the parasitic Hymenopteran communities present there and how they may have been affected by climate change. As part of his studies, Tom also completed a placement at the National Sealife Centre, where he conducted a research project into the problem-solving abilities of the giant Pacific octopus. Alongside his studies, Tom was employed as a seasonal field ecologist gaining experience in bat emergence and re-entry surveys and eDNA surveys. Tom is keen to build upon his previous experience and develop his ecological skillset with MKA Ecology.

Tom is working towards CIEEM Qualifying membership.

Robin Pickett

Robin Pickett BA(Hons) MSc
Graduate Ecologist

Robin joined the team as a graduate ecologist in July 2024 after graduating from Edinburgh Napier with an MSc in Environmental Sciences & Ecotourism.

During his studies, Robin covered modules including field ecology, GIS, EcIA, habitat surveys, ecotourism and data analysis. A keen interest in human use of the environment led to Robin’s thesis on sustainable ecotourism practices in the Philippines. Robin has since undertaken environmental education roles working as a ranger on Fraser Island in Australia, tour guiding roles at Zealandia Ecosanctuary in New Zealand and most recently spent two years with the New Zealand Government in Biosecurity policy.

Robin’s field experience includes river restoration and aquatic invertebrate sampling (Water of Leith Trust, Scotland), bat monitoring (Department of Conservation New Zealand) mark and recapture project involving biometric data collection, tagging, harp netting; and herpetology fieldwork (Wildlands Ecology, New Zealand) which included gathering biometric data of protected lizards and geckos, translocation, and trapping.

He is keen to develop his skills in ecology consultancy with MKA Ecology and is working towards qualifying CIEEM membership.

Suzette Quinn

Suzette Quinn
HR Manager

Suzette joined MKA in April 2024 with over 30 years’ experience in HR and administration.

Suzette spent 20 years working at Hertfordshire County Council as an Independent Legal Clerk providing support and advice. She also worked as a magistrate for the East Herts Bench for 6 years before emigrating to the States. After returning in 2012 Suzette worked on a part time basis.

Eleanor Richards

Eleanor Richards BSc(Hons) MSc Qualifying CIEEM member
Ecologist

Eleanor joined MKA ecology as a Graduate Ecologist in May 2022 after completing a master’s degree in Conservation and Biodiversity at the University of Exeter.

During her undergraduate and master’s degrees Eleanor studied a range of modules including plant and animal physiology, practical field ecology and GIS in conservation enabling her to develop a range of field, laboratory and desk-based research skills. During her studies she became interested in how humans use land and resources and the impacts that it has on the environment, with her master’s research focussing on land use and the impact on water quality and water shrew populations in West Cornwall. Alongside her studies she also volunteered with her local wildlife group and gained experience with habitat management and outreach events to the public by helping host moth and mammal mornings. With MKA Eleanor is keen to develop her experience and skillset in ecological consultancy and she is currently working towards her Qualifying CIEEM membership.

Andy Symes

Andy Symes BSc(Hons) MSc ACIEEM
Senior Ecologist

With over 10 years’ experience as a conservation scientist, ecological consultant and ornithologist, Andy joined MKA Ecology in 2018.

His primary focus is on ornithology, having spent many years at Birdlife International coordinating the annual global IUCN Red List assessment process for over 11,000 bird species. Closer to home his considerable skills in identifying UK and European bird species by sound and sight is a very welcome addition to the MKA team. A lifelong naturalist, Andy also has excellent knowledge of British plants, reptiles, amphibians and mammals. Gareth joined MKA in March 2024, having gained previous experience in business development and recruitment.

Phoebe Waller

Hannah Wallace BSc(Hons) Qualifying CIEEM member
Ecologist

Hannah joined MKA Ecology as a graduate ecologist in June 2023 after completing a bachelors’ degree in Ecology and Conservation at the University of Lincoln.

During her time at university, she completed a wide range of modules such as conservation biology, ecosystem management, environmental data monitoring, animal behaviour and an overseas module in which she studied plant biodiversity in Ecuador’s rainforest. In her final year of university, she conducted a research dissertation into the effects of agriculture on soil health and biodiversity. Hannah has joined MKA Ecology to build on her practical skills in ecology and work towards a career in ecological consultancy.

India Wedge

India Wedge BSc(Hons) Qualifying CIEEM member
Consultant Ecologist

India joined MKA Ecology as a graduate ecologist in January 2020. During her degree at the University of East Anglia, India studied a wide range of topics covering both practical and theoretical ecology.

She strengthened her ecological experiences whilst studying abroad in Australia where she gained skills in many different aspects of ecology, particularly entomology, whilst working for La Trobe University’s ecology department. After completing her studies India volunteered for the National Trust as the Large Blue butterfly ranger which reinforced her interest in pursuing an ecological career. Since joining MKA Ecology India has begun working towards protected species licences and has gained Qualifying CIEEM membership.

Jill Williams

Jill Williams
Administrator

Jill joined MKA in April 2022 having gained extensive administrative experience while working within the travel and eco-tourism industry, and for the last 20 years she has facilitated the organising of worldwide tours for a UK-based birdwatching tour operator.

Recently Jill has been assisting her ecologist husband with surveys for breeding birds, great crested newts, reptiles, and bats. She has travelled extensively in the UK and overseas and loves nothing more than joining friends on a multi-day journey to some far-flung corner to experience its flora, fauna, and food.

In her spare time, Jill has spent three years volunteering as an assistant dog trainer for Dogs Trust, and can usually be found walking the countryside with binoculars around her neck and a cocker spaniel by her side.

Andy Symes

Rory Roche BSc(Hons) ACIEEM
Senior Ecologist

Having joined MKA Ecology in 2020, Rory is an experienced ecological consultant who is passionate about working with clients and multi-disciplinary teams to enable development which protects and enhances the environment.

With Marcus, Rory is currently growing the London practice of MKA Ecology. Rory is familiar with a diverse range of ecological survey and mitigation techniques and has an excellent knowledge of terrestrial habitats and species ecology, wildlife and planning legislation and systems.

He is well versed in undertaking preliminary ecological appraisals, protected species surveys, Natural England licence applications and ecological clerk of works duties. His consultancy experience spans projects relating to housing and commercial development, road and rail schemes and nationally significant infrastructure projects. Able to produce comprehensive and client focused reports, he is an accomplished project manager, developing strong relationships with his clients and team members.

An associate member of the ecologists’ professional body, CIEEM, Rory also holds both great crested newt licence and bat survey licences. Like all of the MKA Ecology team, he is a registered CSCS card holder.

Alisa Davies

Alisa Davies MSc Qualifying CIEEM member
Ecologist

Alisa joined as a graduate ecologist in March 2023. She completed a Masters in Conservation Science and Policy at the University of Exeter in 2020 and an undergraduate degree (MA Cantab) in Psychological and Behavioural Sciences at the University of Cambridge.

Before joining MKA Ecology, she conducted research into the wild African bird trade and trade in parrots as a Wildlife Trade Specialist for The World Parrot Trust and is the lead author on multiple peer-reviewed research papers.

Alisa has had a strong fascination with wildlife since childhood and is interested in all elements of ecology, with particular knowledge in ornithology. In 2017, she volunteered as a research assistant for an Operation Wallacea expedition in Peru where she assisted in surveys of birds, butterflies, terrestrial and riparian mammals, fish, reptiles, and habitats.

Alisa is keen to broaden her skills across all areas of ecology and is working towards her Qualifying CIEEM Membership.

Max Ellis

Max joined MKA Ecology in December 2021 after graduating with a degree in Human Geography from the University of Birmingham.

During his time at university Max studied a wide range of modules relating to ecology; from conservation biology and population genetics to environmental management and climate change. During his studies, Max had opportunities to develop conservation management plans for species and habitats. Before joining MKA, Max gained experience in habitat management and conservation as a volunteer for the Wildlife Trusts at Rutland Water. With MKA Ecology, Max is developing his skills in ecological surveys, and is currently working towards CIEEM Qualifying Membership.

Lydia

Lydia Ennis ACIEEM
Senior Ecologist

Lydia has re-joined the MKA Ecology team as part of the London office, having worked with the Cambridge team between 2018 and 2020. She has an MSc in Conservation Science from Imperial College London, and 10 years’ experience carrying out protected species and habitat surveys.

Lydia has worked with a wide range of landowners and land management interests, including planning and development, angling, forestry and gamekeeping. She believes strongly in all owners and managers of land, both urban and rural, taking pride in and maximising their contribution to nature recovery. She enjoys working with people from different sectors, understanding ecological and management concerns from their perspective, and working towards joint solutions.

An Associate member of the ecologists’ professional body, CIEEM, like all of the MKA Ecology team, Lydia is a registered CSCS card holder.

Olivia Hine BSc(Hons) Qualifying CIEEM member

Olivia joined MKA Ecology as a graduate ecologist in June 2023 after completing a BSc in Geography at the University of Leeds.

As part of her degree, Olivia undertook a year in industry placement with an ecological consultancy, where she developed a keen interest in ecology and gained experience in undertaking protected species surveys and writing a range of technical reports. Being inspired by her placement year, during her final year of study Olivia completed her dissertation investigating the impact of rewilding and a range of climatic factors on butterfly biodiversity in the UK, as well as a field research project comparing the difference in botanical species composition in two areas of a rewilding project.

With MKA, Olivia is keen to develop her experience and skillset in the ecological sector.

Radha Singh

Radha Singh BSc(Hons)
Graduate Ecologist

Radha joined MKA Ecology as a Graduate Ecologist in September 2024 after completing a BSc in Biology at the University of Southampton.

During her time at university, Radha studied a range of modules relating to ecology; from behavioural and population ecology to biodiversity and conservation biology, as well as field-based modules in which she undertook tropical ecology fieldwork in Belize. Among this, Radha completed her field-based dissertation, investigating the impact of urbanisation on the territorial behaviours of European blackbirds. This increased her interest in biodiversity management within urban areas and, thus, towards ecological consultancy.

Radha is keen to strengthen her practical skills and develop experience within the ecological sector.

Jessica Thomson

Jessica Thomson BSc Qualifying CIEEM member

Jess joined MKA Ecology as a graduate ecologist in September 2024 after completing a BSc in Ecological and Environmental Sciences at The University of Edinburgh.

During her dissertation, Jess worked in partnership with local farmers to identify the impacts that semi-natural habitats have on the diversity and richness of beetle populations in agricultural wheat fields. Jess also studied a wide range of modules including plant physiological ecology, sustainable agri-food systems, ecological statistical analysis, and conservation science.

Jess is keen to develop her skills in ecology consultancy with MKA Ecology and is working towards qualifying CIEEM membership.

Henry Wyn-Jones

Henry Wyn-Jones BSc(Hons) Qualifying CIEEM member
Ecologist

Henry joined MKA Ecology as a graduate ecologist in January 2023 after completing a BSc in Biomedicine at the University of East Anglia.

During his studies, Henry completed his lab-based dissertation on the prevalence and strain diversity of the potentially harmful bacteria, Wolbachia, within a British moth population. He has had a passion for ecology since a young age and is interested in all wildlife, with a high level of expertise in ornithology, moths and butterflies. Henry also has an interest in science communication which has led to work with organisations such as the RSPB and the Norfolk Wildlife Trust. With MKA, Henry is keen to develop his theoretical and practical ecological skillset in the consultancy sector.

Felix Bird

Felix Bird BSc Grad CIEEM
Senior Ecologist

Joining MKA Ecology in 2018 Felix, a graduate in Biology launched his career as an ecological consultant on the basis of a lifelong interest in natural history.

Ranging from botany to birds, Felix has a comprehensive understanding of British wildlife, developed over years of volunteering for the RSPB and biological records centres.  Felix’s interest in the natural world has been a focus of his travels to biodiverse destinations including Madagascar and Borneo. A student member of the ecologists’ professional body, CIEEM, like all of the MKA Ecology team, Felix is a registered CSCS card holder.

Thomas Allman

Thomas Allman BSc MSc
Graduate Ecologist

Thomas joined MKA Ecology as a Graduate Ecologist in September 2024 after completing a Masters in Land and Ecological Restoration at the Eden Project in Cornwall.

During Thomas’ Masters project, he collaborated with Butterfly Conservation to statistically model and simulate the metapopulations of the endangered marsh fritillary butterfly. Other aspects of his studies included mapping and creating a plan for a china clay tip, as well as analysing management plans for invasive species.

Thomas has a wide variety of survey experience. He has conducted mammal surveys such as bat, otter and water vole and fortunate enough to have taken part in the Canal and River Trust’s green recovery challenge fund project to restore and improve the habitats of water mammals and pollinators.

Thomas is currently working towards his Qualifying CIEEM Membership

Callan Denham

Callan Denham BSc(Hons) Qualifying CIEEM member
Ecologist

Callan joined MKA Ecology as a graduate ecologist in March 2023, following five years of focusing on ecology and environmental consultancy.

After graduating from the University of Sheffield in 2019 with a Zoology degree, he worked as an entomologist in Scotland before moving to the civil service and volunteering regularly with wildlife charities and organisations such as the RSPB and National and Wildlife Trusts. As a current MKA Ecology employee, Callan is keen to improve his capability in the ecological consultancy sector and gather experience across the wide range of UK ecological survey types.

Hazel Dudley

Hazel Dudley MBiolSci Qualifying CIEEM member
Graduate Ecologist

Hazel joined MKA Ecology in September 2023 after completing a master’s degree in Zoology at the University of Sheffield.

During her degree, Hazel completed her lab-based dissertation on the community ecology of tropical butterflies in the Ecuadorian Andes. She also studied a broad range of modules including behavioural ecology, evolutional of terrestrial ecosystems and conservation biology. Hazel has also volunteered with wildlife charities and her local biological records centre, on a project called ‘finding rare species in the Malverns’. Hazel is keen to gain further experience in all areas of ecology. She has gained her Qualifying CIEEM Membership.

Liam Price

Liam Price MBiol (Hons) MCIEEM
Senior Ecologist

Liam joined MKA in 2024, having worked for large and small consultancies during his seven years as a professional ecologist.

Liam is greatly experienced with biodiversity and Natural Capital projects, delivering assessments on large scale infrastructure projects, corporate target setting and offsetting projects, including the design and implementation stages. His experience covers projects in housing, road, utilities and commercial sectors, in addition to NSIPs. He is experienced in managing complex projects, including those with multiple stakeholders, and has a track record of delivering positive outcomes for clients and the environment. Liam is experienced in conducting habitat surveys (BNG/UK Habs and Phase 1) and a range of ecological surveys and assessments, including: great crested newt, reptiles, water voles, otters, bats, badgers and Ecological Clerk of Works.

Consultant Ecologist

Megan joined MKA Ecology as a graduate ecologist in March 2021 after completing a master’s degree in Species Identification and Survey Skills at the University of Reading.

During her master’s degree Megan studied a range of consultancy skills linked to UK wildlife as well as both practical and theoretical ecology. Throughout her studies she completed a 6 month placement working as a graduate ecologist where she was able to assist in surveys for great crested newt, bats, reptiles, dormice, badgers and water vole. She is continuing to develop her ecological consultancy experience with MKA Ecology and is working towards CIEEM Qualifying membership. Megan is a CSCS card holder.
